Kickboxing at Our Coquitlam Academy

Why Train Striking Here

Our kickboxing program is built around technique first: stance, distance, defense, then power. It is open to students 13 and older, and you can start with no background at all.

You Learn to Actually Strike

Punches, kicks, footwork and defense, taught as skills you can perform under pressure. The conditioning comes from doing the work properly, not from a playlist and a timer.

Training That Scales to You

Newer students drill technique and pad work at a controlled pace. Students who want to push get harder rounds. Same class, different intensity, nobody dragged along or held back.

A Genuine Outlet

Hitting pads properly for an hour clears your head in a way a treadmill does not. Most of our adults come in tense after work in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam or Burnaby and leave loose.

A Different Kind of Workout

Kickboxing Classes That Teach You Something

Plenty of gyms sell kickboxing as a fitness format: swing at a bag, follow the count, leave sweaty. Ours is a striking class. You are taught a stance you can move from, how to keep your hands up, how to control distance, and how to throw a kick that would actually land.

The result is that progress is measurable. You can see your own technique change month over month, which is a far better reason to keep training than watching a calorie counter. Students 13 and older train together at True North Jiu-Jitsu in Coquitlam.

Your First Class

What Happens When You Walk In

New students get a free trial class. Wear athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and bring water. You do not need gloves, shin pads or any gear to try the class, and nobody is going to put you in a hard round on your first night.

Expect a warm-up, technique instruction broken down step by step, and pad work with a partner who knows you are new. An instructor will watch your form and fix it while you go. You will be tired at the end and you will have learned something specific.

Room to Progress

Competitive Striking for Those Who Want It

This is competitive kickboxing, taught as a combat sport rather than a fitness trend. If you want to push into harder training and test your striking, the coaching here supports that and the standard on the mats is real.

If you never want to spar hard, that is a completely normal way to train too. Most of our students are here for skill, fitness and stress relief. Both groups get taught the same technique correctly, which is the part that matters either way.

One Academy, Several Programs

Cross-Training Under One Roof in Coquitlam

Kickboxing sits alongside adult Jiu-Jitsu, kids Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling and women's self-defense at True North Jiu-Jitsu. Many adults train striking and grappling in the same week, and the two complement each other: one teaches distance and timing on your feet, the other teaches control once things close.

The academy also has a sauna and cold plunge for recovery, plus private lessons if you want focused one-on-one work on your striking. Ask at the front desk about combining programs on a single membership.

Beyond the Bag Work

What Regular Training Builds

Kickboxing at True North Jiu-Jitsu is one of several programs under one roof, and students often find the benefits carry well past the striking itself.

Conditioning You Can Feel

Rounds on the pads are interval training with a purpose. Legs, shoulders, core and lungs all get worked, and technique improving is what keeps you coming back through the hard part.

Balance and Coordination

Striking is a full-body coordination sport. Shifting weight, turning through a kick and recovering your stance sharpens balance and body awareness that transfers to any other sport you play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Our Coquitlam Kickboxing Classes

Thinking about your first kickboxing class at True North Jiu-Jitsu? Here are the questions new students ask most often. Anything else, call the academy at (604) 777-0396.

No. Our kickboxing classes are taught from the fundamentals, starting with stance, guard and footwork before anything else. New students join throughout the year and are paired with partners who know they are beginners. Your first class is free, so you can see the format before committing to anything.

Our kickboxing program is for students aged 13 and up, and it trains as one adult class. Younger students in Coquitlam are welcome in our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program, which runs for ages 5 to 12. Teens who are 13 or older can also train in our adult Jiu-Jitsu classes.

Nothing beyond athletic clothing you can move in and a water bottle. Gloves, wraps and shin guards become useful once you decide to keep training, and we will advise you on what to buy rather than leave you guessing. Do not spend money on equipment before your free trial class.

Real striking. This is competitive kickboxing taught as a combat sport, with proper technique, pad work and defense, rather than a choreographed fitness class. The workout is genuinely hard, but the conditioning is a byproduct of training the skill correctly. Students who want to push into harder training are supported in doing so.

No. Sparring is something you build toward when you and your coach agree you are ready, and plenty of students train for years without ever competing. You can focus entirely on technique, pad work and fitness if that is what you want. Nobody is pushed into contact they did not ask for.
